Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why should I learn to touch type?
Touch typing is a really valuable skill that will save you thousands of hours of time by increasing your typing speed and accuracy. Once mastered, it allows you to type without looking at the keyboard so you can concentrate on what you are writing rather than searching for the keys to type it. Touch typing uses muscle memory, like riding a bike or driving a car,. Once mastered, it is an invaluable skill for life. It also helps to reduce the risk of repetitive strain injuries (RSIs) because the typist is in the correct position for typing.
  • Why is typeify different from any other courses out there?
typeify courses are bespoke, both in terms of the typing lessons and the physical activity packs which are part of the course. The lessons have been designed (and refined) based on observations from teaching many people of all ages to touch type. The lessons have been carefully structured to ensure the right amount of repetition for each set of new keys before the next pair of keys are introduced. The fun activity pack keeps students engaged throughout the course. These activities help students learn the necessary keyboard skills.
  • Why should I pay for a typeify course when there are so many free touch typing software available online?
The typeify courses are completely different to unsupervised free courses. typeify courses are coach-led in small groups which means that the students are monitored and immediately corrected when they revert back to using just index fingers (which they all will do!) Free courses have a small number of lessons for each new key learnt. This means that the pace is too fast to cement learning before new keys are introduced. The typeify courses have many more lessons for each key to ensure students only move on to new keys once the coach has seen they are ready to progress. typeify uses a best in class platform with bespoke lessons created within that platform. The lessons have been designed using experience from teaching students, to create a bespoke supervised course to learn all 26 letters. It is this repetition of typing the same keys many times, in different patterns, with commonly used words and fun games, before moving on to learn new keys that creates the necessary muscle memory. In turn this builds up to mastering all 26 alphabet letters without looking at the keyboard.
  • How long does the course take?
There are three courses, Bronze, Silver and Gold. Each course is 8 hours of lessons, plus a recommended 8 hours of practise using the additional modules provided. The course is typically split into 1 hour sessions, spread over 8 weeks, or an intensive 2 hour sessions over 4 days in the school holidays.
  • What is the difference between each course?
The Bronze course is suitable for beginners. In this course, students learn all 26 letters on the keyboard, 4 punctuation marks (full stop, comma, semi colon and backslash) and some of the most commonly typed words. The Silver course is suitable for students who can already touch type all 26 letters on the keyboard. This course focuses on learning to touch type all punctuation marks and numbers, improving speed and accuracy, and some dictation. The Gold course is suitable for students who can already touch type all letters and punctation marks . This course is designed to enhance speed and accuracy, with advanced note taking (typing the key points, rather than just typing verbatim). This extra taught skill is not only useful in writing projects, listening to teachers, in seminars and lectures, but vital in many professions. Each course is accompanied by a 6 months post course licence to the online lessons and follow-on modules.
  • What ages is the typeify touch typing course suitable for?
Our Student courses are suitable for children and adults aged from 9 to 99! There are several reasons for the minimum age of 9; 1. Learning to touch type requires concentration and focus to memorise 26 letters and several punctuation keys which can be difficult for younger children. 2. Children’s hands and fingers need to be physically long enough to reach the keys across a keyboard. 3. Children need the fine motor skills and finger muscles must be sufficiently well developed to lift and tap with each finger independently of the other fingers on each hand.
  • Are the typeify tutors DBS checked?
Yes, all of our tutors have an Enhanced DBS check.
  • How fast and accurate will students touch type by the end of the course?
The student’s speed and accuracy will depend on their natural memory aptitude, their age and how much additional practise they put in outside the course sessions. When learning to touch type, accuracy is more important than speed. It is easier to speed up once the keys have been correctly learnt. It is more difficult to improve accuracy when keys have been incorrectly learnt. By the end of each course, we aim for the students to reach: Bronze course - 15-25 words per minute and 95% accuracy Silver course - 25-35 words per minute and 96% accuracy Gold course – 35-45 words per minute and 97% accuracy

  • My employees can ‘get by’ with their typing. Why should I pay for them to do a touch typing course?
Touch typing is significantly faster and more accurate than the ‘hunt-and-peck’ method. Employees who can type quickly and accurately will complete tasks, emails, reports, and other work-related documents more efficiently, ultimately saving time and increasing productivity. The initial expense associated with providing touch typing courses will be outweighed by the long-term benefits of increased productivity and reduced error rates. The average speed when ‘hunting and pecking’ is 27 words per minute verse 40 words per minute touch typing. This is an increased typing productivity of almost 50%.
